Working from home is something that so many people dream of doing. It’s becoming the norm to start up businesses and be your own boss, whether you’re a blogger, work-at-home parent, or small business owner. The tricky thing about working from home is that there has to be an intentional balance between work and play, or you can easily fall into the routine of working in pajamas and never leaving your bed.

I’ve been working different jobs from home for the past 6 years, so I’ve got a few tips for making the most of your work day and being as productive as possible..

  1. Get dressed and looking presentable every day, even if that just means changing into some fresh workout clothes and throwing on some mascara. This will help get you in the mindset to get some work done, whereas pajamas will just give you an excuse to lay around and not work as hard.
  2. Have set work hours that are taken seriously – when it’s time to work, work hard.
  3. Create a designated work space, whether it’s a whole home office or just a clean desk in your room where you can work every day.
  4. Start each day off with a fresh to-do list, and stick to it like glue.
  5. Give yourself set times for breaks and exercise, so you don’t feel burnt out and can stay healthy.
  6. Invest in a planner so you can keep track of all deadlines and important dates.
  7. Don’t get into the habit of working from your bed. Every so often is fine, like if you’re having a bad day or aren’t feeling well, but if you do it every day, you’re going to be more inclined to slack off or work more slowly.
  8. Turn off all distractions, like social media and emails. Check those things during your break times or when you’re done with your most important work.
  9. Work on the harder, more taxing tasks when you’re feeling the most productive. For some, this is as soon as they wake up in the morning, while for others it’s after they been awake for a few hours or late at night when they have peace and quiet to really focus.
  10. Give yourself days off. I know this sounds a bit counter-productive, but if you work yourself to the point of exhaustion every single day, you’re going to burn out fast and not being to give your best effort. Even if it’s just one day a week, that time off will help keep you sane and allow you to de-stress from work.
